Workshop on Contemporary Challenges and International Humanitarian Law

The National Committee on International Humanitarian Law and the International Committee of the Red Cross, in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice on Monday, held a workshop on contemporary and international humanitarian law challenges.

A delegate to the Prime Minister, Minister of Justice Dr. Bassam Talhouni, during the opening of the workshop, said that the workshop discussed legal topics of interest to the international legal community at the present time when the region is witnessing an international armed conflict or non-international and their direct and indirect effects, which poses a range of legal, social and cultural challenges He pointed to the importance of promoting compliance with the provisions of international humanitarian law in the protection of refugees and the protection of vulnerable groups of people, especially women.

Talhouni showed the new challenges which we live and we see daily, showed a number of legal questions about the legal framework required to frame the work of private military and security companies during armed conflicts and to identify the rules of international humanitarian law to provide protection for civilians trapped in cycles of violence.

The Minister of Justice praised the role played by the International Committee of the Red Cross to be protected during armed conflicts, noting the importance of strengthening their work and build upon shared responsibility within the rules of international humanitarian law.

For his part, Chairman of the National Committee of the International Humanitarian Law, the retired lieutenant genera Mamoun Al-Khasawneh, spoke about the importance of discussing the subject of international law and human rights at the present time at the level of civil society, or at the international level when seen in the Arab region of turmoil and armed conflicts reflected negatively on the lives of citizens.

Al-Khasawneh said the workshop comes within the Commission's efforts, in order that the provisions of the law and published in cooperation with the ministries and government institutions to a group of legal advisers, noting that Jordan has ratified several international treaties and conventions and other related to the field of human rights.

For his part, the Regional Coordinator of the Middle East and North Africa of the Red Cross, Omar Makki, spoke about the work of the International Committee of the Red Cross, sponsor of the rules of international humanitarian law under the Geneva Conventions, in addition to the importance of the application of the rules of international humanitarian law in the face of the challenges posed by the wars of the times.

 

The workshop discussed over two days, the definition of international and humanitarian law and their relationship with human rights and the impact of terrorism and armed conflicts and the protection of victims and the role of advisers in the mechanisms of implementation of international law and the role of international law in the protection of refugees.
